Let’s show our support for the national dragon boat team representing the Philippines at the 2015 SEA Games! The official opening is on June 5, Friday. The dragon boat events will be held on June 6 and 7, at Marina Bay, Singapore.

To prepare audiences for the 28th SEA Games Traditional Boat Race, here is a primer on the competition.

Events

For the 6-Crew events (Men and Women), the teams are composed of four (4) paddlers, one (1) steersman, one (1) drummer and two (2) substitutes. The steersman will steer the boat with a paddle and is also permitted to paddle.

For the 12-Crew events (Men and Women), the teams are composed of ten (10) paddlers, one (1) steersman, one (1) drummer and two (2) substitutes. The steersman will steer the boat with a rudder and is NOT PERMITTED to paddle or provide any other form of propulsion to the boat. Offenders may be disqualified.

Competition Format

The competition format shall follow preliminary rounds to finals.

a. In the preliminary round, a lane draw will determine into which lane a team will go into.

b. Using a fastest time-fastest lane format, the time in the preliminary round will determine the lane assignment for the final round.

1st in Preliminary Round : Lane 3
2nd in Preliminary Round: Lane 4
3rd in Preliminary Round: Lane 2
4th in Preliminary Round: Lane 5
5th in Preliminary Round: Lane 1
6th in Preliminary Round: Lane 6

At the finals, the boat that finishes the race first shall be the winner.
